These Instagram Accounts Inspired Me to (finally!) Become a Plant Parent

It is news to no one that having foliage in your home can bring both peace and color to a potentially drab space. For the longest time, the only “living” thing that inhabited my apartment was me, my roommate, and a very miniature plant, that I failed to keep alive past two weeks. With so much time being spent in our homes as a result of quarantine, I decided it was finally time to reconsider my abilities to take care of a thing that seems to bring such joy and life to so many people inside of their homes.

Before, going to buy the two babies who eventually became a beautiful addition to my bedroom, I consulted the only place I knew could potentially bring me inspiration for which plant I should buy—Instagram. The following are 5 plant accounts that everyone should be following this summer.

The first account that I stumbled upon was @planoramic, a Detroit based plant enthusiast whose aesthetic was awe-inspiring. The owner, of the account, Angela, uses #monstermonday, that so many other plant enthusiast use in describing large plants that oftentimes need low maintenance (perfect for super busy plant owners like me!).

If you’re in LA, then this next instagram account is perfect for you. Namoo LA is a LA-based plant shop that has both pickup and local delivery (within 35 miles) options. If not, thats okay too! They ship plants across the United States. I ran across their instagram while looking for the #houseplants and can I say, they have an amazing variety!!

Speaking of houseplants, this next account made me want to buy plants and burn incenses at the same time. @houseplantdiary is run by a plant influencer for NYC based plant shop, Brooklyn Plantology. This instagram posts both inspirational pictures of homes with plants as well as plants you can buy inside the store. I am always especially inspired by black femme creatives and black-owned buisnesses, so if you’re looking to buy in NYC, I suggest checking out Brooklyn Plantology!

I’ve been posting quite a bit about other accounts/plant friends #indoorplants over the past few years. So, I thought you’d like to see more of my house plants, what #plants I have, my #plantstyling, know how my love of #houseplants began and why it continues! Funny, how a personal life situation can sometimes propel one inward; to get still, quiet and contemplative. I got quieter and focused on the four house plants I had and a three #leaf, #succulent cutting that a friend had shared with me. Going back to 2014-15 or so; I came across some YouTube videos about taking care of house plants. Wow, so I thought it would be a nice distraction from the things I couldn't change during that period of my life, although, I could choose to have a healthy distraction. They were a handful of house #plantaccounts here. I was probably one of about 12-15, give or take a few. I'd found a place to just #BEwithPLANTS. As my posts flowed, I became more and more inspired each day. I posted about whatever came to my mind as it related to house plants. Plants for this and plants for that. Lol, this account grow prolifically! I had found a place, well as lent my passion and energy to helped create a beautiful planty online community! Mind you, I'm actually not a Plant Expert; I'm a Plant Influencer, meaning, I've been known to send enough excitement via this medium to have plant friends motivated to #gobuythatplant NOW! I've always been able to inspire people; you know, to do good stuff lol. I share what I love. I share what I know. I share what inspires me. I love looking into other people's homes to see how they live with their plants. I enjoy seeing what folks collect~ baskets, fabrics/textiles, how they use colors and of course how different people in different corners of the world live with their plants. I totally agree that we'd better invite the natural elements of #nature inside of our homes. I believe that I'm an aficionado with having so many plants around and with many years of keeping plants alive than NOT! The fact that I can keep my home totally green with hundreds of plants from winter Solstice to Spring Equinox, for years and years IS something amazing! Lol💚🤗🌿🌱

Instagram account, @palmbeachplantguy, convinced me to buy hanging plants but is especially great for those who are in search for different ways to decorate their homes with plants. Julian, the person behind @palmbeachplantguy, created a perfect “halo-esque” design around his TV that sets a beautiful tone to the space.

Lastly, is Philly based Houseplant Youtuber, Nick Pileggi @phillyfolliage. Nick’s account shows a stunning array of smaller plants that he places on a large white bookcase in beautiful ceramic pots. If you’re in Philly, checkout his shop, @urbanjunglephilly for some pretty new babies!

After binging plant instagram accounts, I bought both a flowering house plant and an english ivy which are both fairly low maintenance. Excited for this new journey!
