With origins in both Egypt and India, later popularized by the fusion between Indian and Jamaican culture, dreadlocks have been both a cultural definer and hairstyle go-to. Popularized in the 1970’s predominantly by the Rastafarian and Reggae movements as well as notable artist/musician, Bob Marley, dreadlocks have taken on a life of their own, becoming prevalent in fashion, art, and (of course) hair culture.

The explosion of social media has allowed for dreadlock culture to expand, with dreadlocks of every color, shape, and style shown across our feeds. Black femmes, in particular have trail-blazed the recent resurgence of natural and faux locs alike. Whether you’re new to the locs community or have always wanted to try the style, these 5 Black Femme creatives will for sure have you wanting to get locs at your next hair appointment.

Youtuber and natural haircare business owner, @danielle_locs, has been growing her natural locs for over 19 years (woah!). Her signature dreadlocks style is curling her natural locs or a “half-up", “half-down” ponytail look. Follow her haircare instagram @daniellebynatureinc to get up to date news about her latest drops!

In search of a few dreadlock haircare tips + tricks? Instagram account @tamikademill is what has been missing in your life. LA, Bay Area and NYC based creative, Tamika De Miller is a model, actor, influencer and entertainer. De Miller frequently posts IGTV content advising on the health and care of dreadlocks while also posting photos of her signature (and oh so stunning!) dreadlocks’ up-do.

If you’re afraid of the commitment of dreadlocking your natural hair, look no further than these next two instagram accounts. Leinel, known by her instagram handle, @lei_smokahontas, is a New York based visual artist and freelance hairstylist. Her faux locs are so beautifully done that it is hard to tell that they are faux at all. Whether you’re interested in short or long locs, @lei_smokahontas has it all.

Another faux dreadlocks specialists is Nikitha, creator of instagram account @naturalbabepro who became well-known for the creative hair pieces adorned throughout her faux locs. Even more so, Nikitha often leaves the ends of her dreadlocks in curls to add a slight twists to the normally tied ends.

Lastly, is Brooklyn based artist, creative and plant enthusiast, @jasminenicholeofficial. Jasmine Nichole is a must-follow account not simply for her amazing dreadlocks but overall aesthetic. Nichole has not only an art and beauty page but is the Creative Director for @brooklynplantology, a Brooklyn plant nursey for wholesale and retail customers!
